The plot is based around remembering ones heritage. The author speaks as a narrator, telling of her past and how she was interested, even far into the future to the current present. She is remembering how she was a dancer, the 17 warriors, the urge to travel, her childhood as a baby growing up, the sun, and the link between the Mississippi and the Congo.
